The Essential Kit
Every ghost hunt or any paranormal investigation in fact, requires some essential bits of kit. It doesn't have to be expensive, although I must admit that some of the more advanced equipment can be a bit pricey. I'm sure that a lot of people out there has at least some of this equipment just to get them started.
1. Camera
Well, this sounds a bit obvious really doesn't it! Nevertheless, you would be suprised what an ordinary camera can pick up.
2. Compass
This is a good, cheap piece of kit. When out on investigations and you take a compass with you, always keep a watchful eye on its movement. Any disturbance in the electromagnetic forces around you could indicate paranormal activity. I find the best compass is the old fashioned one and not these digital ones that are around today.
3. Infrared Thermal Scanner
Yes, it sounds like something out of Star Trek doesn't it. All jokes aside, this piece of kit can be very useful to the intrepid ghost hunter. Although its not the cheapest item out there, it is very good for pin pointing those hot and cold spots.
4. Small Object
This is a technique that is simple but effective if used in the right area. A small object means just that, a small object, personally I like using a small coin. Place a small object on a piece of plain paper, draw an outline around the object so that it sits perfectly inside it. Leave the object alone for a while, in controlled conditions so that you can be assured that there is no tampering. When you return, if the object has moved over the outline, you know there is some strange activity going on.
5. Spare Batteries/Film
Always handy incase things are starting to run out.
6. Tape Recorder
A tape recorder is used for two purposes. Firstly, for logging entries so that you know what has happened in your investigation. Secondly, for recording E V P (electronic voice phenomenon). If you set a tape recorder in an area you are investigating, when you go to play it back, you can sometimes be shocked at what you hear.
7. Thermometer
This is the only accurate way of recording sudden drops or rises in temperature.
8. Torch
You need to be able to see in the dark but try to use a torch as little as possible.
9. Video Camera
Along with the camera, the video camera is probably your most essential bit of kit. Where possible, try to use one with infrared or night vision because they can pick up things the human eye can't see.
10. Walkie-Talkies
When working in a team this is one of the best and cheapest ways to stay in contact.
